How to Succeed in Your Mathematics Courses

There are a number of services to help you do well in your classes:

Tutoring

The math department offers free tutoring, starting one week after classes and running through finals week. Tutoring is available for all 1000 and 2000 level math department classes, as well as Math 3070-3080 (Applied Statistics) and Math 3150-3160 (Engineering math). Tutoring is located in the T. Benny Rushing Mathematics Student Center (beneath the plaza between LCB and JWB). For more information check in the Math department office, JWB 233, 801-581-6851, or on our web pages.

The University offers paid tutoring through the ASUU Tutoring Center. You make an appointment with a tutor who will meet with you individually. There is a fee for this service.

Or you can obtain a list of private tutors from the math department office (233 JWB) or the desk in the math tutoring center.

Mathematics Library

The Mathematics Library is located in room 120 of the John Widtsoe Building. You can check out books, and study and work here. For opening times call 801-581-6208 or 801-581-6273.

How to be a GREAT Math Student

There is a book by Richard Manning Smith, "Mastering Mathematics --- How to be a GREAT Math Student", 3rd edition, Brooks/Cole Publishing Co., 1998. A copy is available at the Marriott Library.

Internet Resources

A great deal of information, including current class schedules, is available online. Start at our home page. You may be particularly interested in a study guide written specifically for undergraduate students taking mathematics courses.

Computing Labs

If you are a student in any of our classes you automatically receive a computing account on our systems. You may use the computer lab in the T. Benny Rushing Mathematics Center (located beneath the plaza between LCB and JWB).

The Math Office

The offices of the Department of Mathematics are located in room 233 of the John Widtsoe Building. Drop by if you have any questions.
