Departmental Scholarships
The mathematics department scholarships are listed below. Scholarships may be awarded to entering, continuing, or transfer students majoring in mathematics. There is a single application which qualifies each applicant for consideration for all relevant scholarships. This form may be picked up from the Mathematics Department office (233 JWB) or downloaded from the web:

Unless otherwise noted, scholarships are awarded based on the following criteria:

  • A brief statement of interest. Since some scholarships consider financial need, any need-related information should be included in this statement.
  • Mathematics related activities.
  • Two letters of recommendation. For continuing students, it is strongly recommended that at least one letter be from a U of U mathematics faculty member.
  • Grade Point Average with special emphasis on math courses taken and the grades achieved in them.
  • ACT/SAT scores for entering freshmen.

Completed applications may be submitted to the Mathematics Department office (233 JWB). They may also be mailed (c/o Undergraduate Scholarship Committee) to the address listed on the bottom of this page. Applications must be received by 5:00 PM Friday, March 13, 2009. Scholarship winners will be notified by the end of April.

    Financial need is considered

  • D. Keith Reed Memorial Scholarship

  • Susan C. Christiansen Memorial Scholarship
    For mathematics education majors

  • C. Bryant and Clara C. Copley Scholarship
    Preference for female candidates, financial need may be considered

  • Calvin H. Wilcox Memorial Scholarship

  • Stephen E. Newman, Jr. Math Department Alumni Scholarship

  • Junius John Hayes Scholarship

  • Junius John Hayes Diversity Scholarship
    Preference given to female, minority candidates with financial need

  • Entering Departmental Scholarship
    One year tuition waiver for entering freshmen intending to major in mathematics. Fees are not included in the tuition waiver, and students receiving this scholarsip must take at least 12 credit hours each semester. Those holding an Honors at Entrance or Presidential Scholarship are ineligible (these awards already carry tuition waivers).

  • Continuing Departmental Scholarship One year tuition waiver for current students or transfer students majoring in mathematics. Fees are not included in the tuition waiver, and students receiving this scholarship must take at least 12 credit hours each semester. Those holding an Honors at Entrance or Presidential Scholarship are ineligible (these awards already carry tuition waivers).
