Math Placement Guide

Beginning math courses at the University of Utah are taken in sequence:

Where you begin in this sequence is determined by your ACT/SAT math scores that are less than two years old, your AP Calculus scores of 3 or greater, your Accuplacer test score which is less than two years old, or your transfer (or concurrent enrollment) college math classes, and your chosen field of study. The math classes you may take beyond the courses listed here depend on your major and your interests. Students who wish to challenge their initial math placement may take (or retake, after a one week waiting period) the Accuplacer math placement exam. To schedule the Accuplacer, contact the Testing Center (498 SSB, 801-581-8733).

Students may register for a lower level math course than indicated by their math placement.

AP Placement Guide

A grade of C or higher is required to progress. If a student enrolls in a course for which they have not earned at least a C in the prerequisite course, the course will be dropped from the student's schedule. Students receiving a grade lower than C in a prerequisite course will need to retake that prerequisite course before moving on, or in the case of classes below Calculus students may take the Accuplacer to try to place into the following course (although this will not replace the grade earned in your GPA).
