Beginning math courses at the University of Utah are taken in sequence:

Where you begin in this sequence depends on your ACT or SAT math score, your AP math score, and your chosen field of study. The math classes you may take beyond the courses listed here depend on your major and your interests. If you wish to challenge your placement score you may take a math placement exam at the Testing Center (801-581-8744, 498 Student Services Building). The fee for the math placement exam is $10. Students who feel that there is a specific legitimate reason why their ACT/SAT math scores are not valid may meet with an advisor in either the Math Department (Aleksandra Jovanovic-Hacon, 581-6837) or the University College (450 SSB, 581-8146). Legitimate reasons might include:
Students may register for a lower level math course than indicated by their ACT/SAT placement.
A grade of C or higher is required to progress. If a student enrolls in a course for which they have not earned at least a C in the prerequisite course, the course will be dropped from the student's schedule.
