 C$    ANSWER(2..MAXLIN) contains search strings of the form

 C$    where the vertical bars separate alternatives.  An  escaped
 C$    bar is not a  separator, however, and  must be included  as
 C$    part of a string.  We  store these as packed characters  in
 C$    KEYSTR(*) with pointers KEYLOC(*) and lengths KEYLEN(*)  to
 C$    the NKEY strings found.
