REU:
Research Experience for Undergraduates

Mathematical Biology Spring 2008

The Mathematical Biology program at the University of Utah will be conducting a mathematical biology research project for undergraduates during the Spring 2008 semester.

We are looking for 1-2 math majors and 1-2 biology majors who are interested in working together in an interdisciplinary group.

Abstract: Building a clock that could keep accurate time on a ship was a central challenge for inventors in the 18th century. Billions of years before, however, bacteria had evolved biological clocks that work in the tossing waters of the sea across a huge range of temperatures. These clocks are built from interacting molecules, and understanding how they work is a central challenge for molecular biologists today. In this REU, students will learn what is known about one such clock, conduct simple experiments in that system, and use that knowledge to develop the mathematical models needed to really understand how it works.

Join an inter-disciplinary team of committed biologists and mathematicians to unravel the mysteries of time.

Applicants must be US Citizens, Nationals, or Permanent Residents.

Participants will be paid for their research.

To apply, submit the application form and one letter of recommendation to Kathleen Moore (LCB 214) by December 6, 2007.

A completed application will consist of:

  • Application Form
  • Letter of Recommendation (Have either a mathematics or biology faculty member who is familiar with your work write a letter on your behalf. Please have the faculty member send the letter directly to Kathleen Moore. Emailing the letter is fine (kerr@math.utah.edu).
