Mathematical modeling and public health: a personal perspective

Abstract: Mathematical modeling is most commonly used in public health to inform decision-making, based on data that may be incomplete and on mechanisms that are often impefectly understood. Mathematical reasoning is crucial in model-building, solving or running models, and interpreting the results. I will use examples from recent projects and outbreak response work at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to illustrate the use of mathematical modeling in public health.
