Mathematics and Astrobiology

Abstract: Astrobiology, or the study of the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe, is a highly interdisciplinary field that seeks to address many of the fundamental questions about life: How did life form on earth? Are we alone in the universe? What are the limits of life, on our planet and beyond? I will present an overview of the field, followed by a few vignettes describing current uses of applied mathematics to address these questions in our solar system and beyond.
