Web Monkeys

The current "webmasters" for the mathbio site are Sam Isaacson and Dave Goulet. Sam generally supplies content while Dave mainly deals with the format and layout of the site. Please pester one of us if you have questions or suggestions.

FAQ

I have recently learned from Nelson Beebe that an extensive FAQ about computing and network resources is kept. It contains some of the same information you'll find below and much much more.

Web Page Creation

Pages can be created using standard html. However, to maintain a uniform appearance with the rest of the website you may use the predefined styles provided in our style sheet. The style sheet can only be modified by a chosen few, but even if that includes you, you should not modify it unless you are VERY SURE that you know what you're doing. Even minor alterations could change the appearance of many pages on our server. Though you shouldn't make changes, you can easily implement these styles after familiarizing yourself with the stylesheet. If you've never used css before you should start doing so now. It can save you an incredible amount of time and in many cases is simpler and more intuitive than standard html style commands.

To see how css can easily be incorporated into your html, you should view the source code on some of our webpages. This one for example.

If you're creating pages for use with the main site you'll need to familiarize yourself with content and implementation of the files top.html and bottom.html . To make it simple to create new pages for use with the main site you can begin with the template file and modify accordingly.

WWW Directory

To begin creating your own pages, create a folder in your home directory called public_html then use the websetup command from the terminal. Once this is done you can add an index.html file or whatever else.

Mail Servers

One outgoing smtp mail server you can use is smtp.utah.edu
One incoming imap mail server you can use if imap.math.utah.edu

Wireless Networking

To get on the U of U secure network you'll need a UID and then visit this site. MacOSX computers already have all the built in software needed for the secure wireless protocol being used. You only need to follow the configuration instructions and download the security certificate. Other operating systems can also be made to play nicely on the wireless network by downloading the appropriate client.

Off-Campus Networking

There are a variety of ways to use U of U network capabilities while off campus, but if you need to access information only available to U of U IP addresses (e.g. library databases or journal archives) then you'll want to have a secure Virtual Private Network Connection. This is pretty simple to do. Just go here and follow the downloading and installation instructions.
VPN is especially useful because it will allow you to access journal articles with the university's subscriptions, without needing to be physically at a university network. If you're new to VPN, it's like a big fun party hat with a university IP address painted on it. Wearing it lets you access journal articles, journal databases (e.g. mathscinet), and anything else restricted to university-only access.

Software Licenses

The university has licenses for many usefull software packages (e.g. Matlab and Maple). This means that you can download and install software on your work computer for a substantially reduced price. You can check out prices and place orders here. Nelson Beebe has more info on department software licenses. You should check with him before buying anything from the university software licensing site.

Printers

I know nothing about Windows and *NIX printing, but here are the instructions for setting up the B&W printer in LCB 331 with a Mac using OS X 10.4. These instructions should also apply to Mac OS 10.3 and earlier, but may require slight modifications.

  • from the Printer Setup Utility, choose the IP Printer Pane
  • select Line Printer Daemon -LPD from the Protocol menu
  • set the Address to print.math.utah.edu and the Queue to lcb331

To setup other printers such as the color printer in LCB 331 or the printer in the computer lab, LCB 115, repeat the above process with Queue names lcb331color and lcb115, respectively.
