Therefore, I provide two utility programs, respectively bmp2piq and pcx2piq. These programs look at the file headers of the image to find the number of pixels in width and height. It generates a LaTeX insertion file with the ".piq" suffix (instead of ".pcx" or ".bmp" which invokes a \begin(picture) and a convenient \put to have it a box of suitable sizes. The difference with Henk Huisman's version is that it can handle a set of files, it the argument consains wild characters (*). Available (source C + PC executable) in ftp://ftp.lps.u-psud.fr/pub/latex/contrib/pcx2piq.zip and ftp://ftp.lps.u-psud.fr/pub/latex/contrib/bmp2piq.zip (compiled with DJGPP, runs in DOS windows of Win3.11, Win95 and WinNT). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Daniel Taupin, Physique des Solides, Univ. Dear Colleague -- A final reminder that the Call for Papers for TUG'98 closes this week. Papers received after 30th January are very unlikely to be considered, so I urge anyone considering offering a paper or poster session to communicate with the Programme Committee with maximum urgency. The 1998 TeX User Group conference, TUG'98 will take place in Torun, Poland, between 17th and 21st August 1998. The theme of the conference is "Integrating TeX with the Surrounding World", and papers which specifically address that theme will be most welcome, although papers on any topic which is relevant to TeX, typography, and/or electronic publishing will be considered. If you are considering proposing a paper or offering a poster session, please be aware that the last date for receipt of proposals is 30th January 1998. Further details are available from the TUG'98 web pages: http://www.tug.org/tug-98/ (general information) http://www.tug.org/tug-98/call.html (call for papers) If for any reason the TUG server is down, the same documents can be found at: http://www.rhbnc.ac.uk/tug-98/ (general information) http://www.rhbnc.ac.uk/tug-98/call.html (call for papers) Philip Taylor, Chairman: TUG'98 Programme Committee P.S. Is there a macro which can be used in LaTeX2e and which is able to do the following:

- you may begin (and end) a two column layout at any place in your document you wish
- you can fill in text in each column seperately (a separate file for each column)
- The length of a row can be longer than the hight of page

multicol.sty is not what I'm looking for, since the text is flowing there from the right column to the left one. What I want is to continue the text in the left column of the following page after having filled up the preceeding left column. And the same for the right column.

Thanks for any help in advance,

i know, because i was responsible for the arrangement and definitions. the original spec for the ams cyrillic fontS (after which the wncy* fonts are patterned) included these requirements: - the input should be the same, using as few control sequences as possible, as the 1980 math reviews cyrillic transliteration scheme. - the output, outside of a "cyrillic" context, should be the same as the mr transliteration. - the output *in* a "cyrillic" context should be correct, regardless of language (the languages covered include ukrainian, bulgarian, serbian, and a number of other languages in addition to russian). this is explained in a note at the end of the file cyracc.def, to be found on ctan in fonts/amsfonts/plaintex/ . the ams fonts were intended to be used for limited bibliographic material (book titles, author names, etc.) within mathematical reviews; they were designed for input by people whose knowledge of slavic languages is not native, and who would be using "western" keyboards. thus transliteration was the appropriate convention. the original fonts were released for public use after many requests -- there was no other cyrillic font available for many years -- but with the understanding that since they fit the original purpose for which they were designed, the ams would not make any changes just to suit them for other uses. since the original ams cyrillic fonts were created with mf79, which was incompatible with mf84 (the present and "final" version), when cyrillic fonts were needed at the university of washington for output devices other than those originally supported, the fonts were independently re-implemented by thomas ridgeway in mf84, with a very few changes (filling of some empty cells with pre-1917 letters). they were offered to ams for distribution to replace the obsolete mf79 fonts; this offer was accepted, as it made it unnecessary for the ams to do the job. there are some alternative metrics and ligatures available for these fonts, via the virtual font mechanism. look for .vpl files in the ctan area fonts/amsfonts/cyr-alt/ and please read the READ.ME file. -- barbara beeton 20-May-1998 13:12:44-GMT,3561;000000000000 Received: from relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de (relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de [129.206.119.201]) by csc-sun.math.utah.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id HAA28461 for ; Nevertheless it exhibits some drawbacks: - usual characters (such as soft sign, "yo"=umlauted-e, short I, reverse E) have to be typed with ugly ligatures like p1, e1, e0, i0, etc. - the umlauted Ukrainian I (\"i in western coding) is omitted, so that the official name of Ukraine's capital Kiev (now Kyiv) cannot be typed! - teaching coding of russian canot be types, since it requires accents (acute) on vowels: a, e, i, o, u, y, ya, yo. But the \' macrop does not work since the acute accent is NOT at the same place in cm* fonts and in wncy* fonts. The purpose of my "excy*" fonts is to solve these problems. Using T1 encoding ================= To have accented letters requires more than 128 characters in each font. Besides, when using T1 encoding (\renewcommand\encodingdefault{T1}) then LaTeX does not use the \accent primitive but - if existing - uses letters with code > 127, for example ^^E9 in case of \'e. Thus I have put acute accented cyrillic letters at the same place as the western acute-accented vowels. Fortunately there is an acute-y! In the same way: - \"i and \"I point to a place where a copy of short i (resp I) has been put. - \`e and \`E point to ca copy of reverse E (whose pronumciation is similar to French \`e...) - \^e and \^E give the accented reverse E - \"e and \"E give the "yo" vowel - \^i and \^I give the umlauted Ukrainian I Additional ligatures ==================== - \'y + u gives "yu" accented (same for upper case) - \'y + a gives "ya" accented (same for upper case) - apostrophe after consonnants "n", "ts", "r", "s", "sha", "v", "shcha", "l", "d" is transformed to a soft sign (the usual convention is to represent the soft sign with an apostrophe). Same for upper case. Other ligatures are the same as in wncy* fonts. But the \' macrop does not work since the acute accent is NOT at the same place in cm* fonts and in wncy* fonts. all these things can be done with the wncy* fonts, some more easily than others, of course. the wncy* fonts are meant to be used with the macros in cyracc.def, distributed as part of the amsfonts collection. in cyracc.def, the following combinations are implemented: \"e and \"e for "yo" \i and \I for the ukrainian short i \`e and \`E for reverse e \=e and \=E for the mirror-image of the reverse e \"\i for the umlauted ukrainian i it is not well documented at the user level, but stress marks (the acute accent) are also implemented in cyracc.def. the acute accent is not "natively" russian or used in slavic cyrillic scripts, except to indicate stress for pedagogical reasons. for this reason, the usual \' coding was rejected in favor of a convention that is clearly different -- \! before the stressed vowel. (it was considered highly unlikely that this would conflict with the plain tex convention for negative thin space in math mode; that is also supported via a test for math mode.) this works for all vowels, including those represented with two letters beginning with y; "yo" is the only exception -- this is almost always a stressed vowel, and an additional stress mark is not needed. comments in the file cyracc.def and the input instructions for wncy* fonts in the amsfonts user's guide (amsfndoc.ps is a ready-to-print version on ctan in fonts/amsfonts/doc/ ) describe all these features. this is not meant to detract from the new conventions that daniel has defined, only to clarify the situation with respect to the amsfonts. -- barbara beeton 8-Jun-1998 16:08:02-GMT,2955;000000000001 Received: from relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de (relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de [129.206.119.201]) by csc-sun.math.utah.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id KAA27702 for ; Mon, 8 Jun 1998 10:07:58 -0600 (MDT) Received: from relay (relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de [129.206.119.201]) by relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id SAA25286; Mon, 8 Jun 1998 18:06:11 +0200 (MET DST) Received: from RELAY.URZ.UNI-HEIDELBERG.DE by RELAY.URZ.UNI-HEIDELBERG.DE (LISTSERV-TCP/IP release 1.8b) with spool id 355522 for TEX-EURO@RELAY.URZ.UNI-HEIDELBERG.DE; Mon, 8 Jun 1998 18:06:09 +0200 Received: from physol.lps.u-psud.fr (physol.lps.u-psud.fr [193.55.39.183]) by relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id SAA25278 for ; Mon, 8 Jun 1998 18:06:07 +0200 (MET DST) Received: from pctaupin2.lps.u-psud.fr by physol.lps.u-psud.fr with SMTP (1.38.193.4/16.2) id AA08429; Mon, 8 Jun 1998 18:04:09 +0200 X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.04 [en] (Win95; I) Mime-Version: 1.0 References: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Message-ID: <357BFEA4.50A001EC@lps.u-psud.fr> Date: Mon, 8 Jun 1998 18:09:24 +0300 Reply-To: TeX-Euro Distribution List for European TeX Users Sender: TeX-Euro Distribution List for European TeX Users From: taupin Subject: Re: Cyrillic fonts with T1 encoding To: Multiple recipients of list TEX-EURO Barbara Beeton wrote: > > daniel taupin has written, with respect to the wncy* fonts: > > The wncyr* fonts (by AMS) had the important advantage of translating > american transliteration of russian cyrillic letters. The answer is: a- cyracc.def only works on plain (not latex), and requires OT1 encoding b- no ligature enables soft sign as an apostrophe 2. there are lh fonts (namely rx*). The answers are: a - the rx* fonts work on T2 encoding, which is different from T1. Unless somebody builds virtual fonts (???) they are very hard to use under T1 b - they have NO ligature at all enabling west transliteration. For example sh is not translated as the letter cha (anyway, characters are in the russian order, no in the western encopding (in Russian, E is the 6th letter of the alphabet, and in western europeant it is the 5th on). Therefore, I maintain that the fonts I produced are very useful to typeset russian with western keyboards and T1 encoding... and without a lot of macros to input any letter with no single western equivalence. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daniel Taupin, Physique des Solides, Univ. This program runs under DOS and provides a small latex file with adapted \begin{picture, _put commands and so on to insert a PCX file in a LaTeX source. Unfortunately, I do not have the source. My present need is exactly the same, but NOT from a PCX file but a BMP file. => question => has somebody (possibly Henk Huisman) the source of pcx2piq (which I shall adapt for BMP), or an equivalent routine, somethiung like bmp2piq.exe ? If I write \special{em:graph file.gif) DVIDRV (emTeX) complains with a warning 1300 (not a valid graph file) but the output is correct! Therefore, I think that emTeX drivers do accept GIF file inserted (with a warning). On the contrary, DVIWIN makes a conversion but the image is badly scaled... and truncated (the remaining part is correct, however). DVIPS does not accep GIF file insertions. This is unfortunate for publications with large figures (half tone photographs). ===> Any comment? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Daniel Taupin, Physique des Solides, Univ. The standard file system with NT is NTFS and nothing else. FAT is only for compatibility reasons. You are using a rather good OS with a crippled FS. So why don't you use only a "small" FAT partition for data exchange between the OSes. (No one forces you to use long file names within the better FSs) > 4. emTeX drivers (viewers) crash on WinNT due to "unsupported graphic mode". > > ---> On winNT, impossible to view DVIs which imply both virtual fonts AND font libraries. > > Questions: > 1. has somebody tried to update DVIWIN to accept VF files? > 2. has E. So why should Eberhardt worry about WinNT problems. BTW the standard FS with OS/2 is HPFS, where you also don't need FLI's anymore. I would recommend to use a native Win32 TeX distribution. MikTeX or Web2C. Both are complete and their maintainers are doing a great job. > 3. has somebody attempted to make WINDVI accept FLI files? I don't think so because the are proprietary. [...] Nonetheless it would be possible to add FLI support to dvi drivers... like it was added long time ago to ``dvips''! Daniel, probably you can help the author of WinDvi to integrate the FLI routines into this dvi viewer. You can find the FLI routines within the dvips sources (v5.76) in the file ``flib.c'' and in the files ``dvips.c'', ``loadfont.c'', and ``resident.c'' (search for `#ifdef FONTLIB'). ...or should they better be integrated in both dvi viewers, XDvi and WinDvi? ;-) > > 3. has somebody attempted to make WINDVI accept FLI files? > > I don't think so because the are proprietary. Standard files are PK, GF > and PXL. FLI files are proprietary in the sense that they were invented by a single person, but this person has documented the file format and does not set any restriction upon the use of this file format in other programs. Comments: To: TeX-Euro Distribution List for European TeX Users To: Multiple recipients of list TEX-EURO Hi again! Once more, I have absolutely no objections to emTeX and its FLI files. Sorry, if my first reply sounds a little bit "hard". But this was not my intention. ;-) A secound thought on FLI files showed me that a real advantage of those files are the reduction of files (not disk space) in a directory which increases clearness. But not all PK in one FLI. ;-) Bernd Raichle wrote: > Nonetheless it would be possible to add FLI support to dvi drivers... > like it was added long time ago to ``dvips''! > Daniel, probably you can help the author of WinDvi to integrate the > FLI routines into this dvi viewer. But if it's hard work, it is IMHO not realy necessary. Don't ask me to do that, because I'm not a programmer. I think you have tested it on your computer, so I'm a little bit worried about to say that DVISCR works with NT if you omitt the /oa option. OK, only 640x480 with ? colors, but better than nothing. This Problem appeares also under OS/2: only standard mode or DVIPM. The reason is I think the graphics engine of both OSes. BTW DVIPM is no problem, it's the best DVI viewer I've ever seen. The only disadvantage is the lack of PostScript support over ghostscript. Therefore, I tried to recompile it with djgpp and I got a source dvicopy.c + dvicopy.h in the CTAN, the whole in a directory with dvitype. Unfortunately, the C source incoudes also a "config.h" which is NOT in that directory, not in the upper one. Moreover, there is no README saying where or how to generate this config.h. There is also a makefile in that directory, but it lacks a lot of files or programs, and it contains NO comments. I found several version of dvicopy.c, but even with the dvicopy.h, C compilation is not possible. First, there is a need of a config.h which is not provided in the distrib. Secondly, there is often a Makefile, which invokes a lot of other things, including tangle to reconstruct... the C source provided. Therefore, I ask the quastion: Has somebody been able to recompile dvicopy.c as given in the various sites listed by ftpsearch? Or, conversely, has somebody a complete distribution of dvicopy to be compiled with a C compiler, and not with a lot of things including Web2c, Pascal, etc., which finaly seem to fail... BTW, my impression is that there are two major versions od dvicopy: one with the TFM, PK, VF access paths hard coded at compilation time, and another with these locations defined by environment variables. Of course I prefer the second solution (which I can adapt if needed). For example, you said that czech.sty is different in cstex distribution and in babel distribution - and it's completely right and it is on purpose. Babel is a way to have all languages in one document, all of them in reasonable quality. Cstex is a way to have Czech/Slovak text in best possible quality, according to Czech typography standards etc. I was told that it was impossible to use these cstex-like czech.sty features in babel - and babel is somewhat compromised (and I think these compromises arise from the very nature of babel - "to know everything"). czech.sty from cstex distribution is "perfect" for Czech text (although really bad for mixing Czech, English and - say - French). There might be a similar pattern in other "duplicities" you mentioned... *-- Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. [A. However, with XML gaining ground, the latter seems to be just a matter of time. At the American Math Society, we have been trying to tackle the first problem -- will the symbols be ready when the browsers are -- and we have now collected several hundred symbols not recognized by Unicode that we will propose to be added. However, we don't know how all of these symbols are used, or what they mean, and we're asking for help. The Web page http://www.ams.org/STIX/glyphs/proposal/newsub/challenge.html contains a selection of these symbols along with questions about them and a list of the information we need in order to convince the Unicode Technical Committee (UTC). If you are familiar with the notation used in scientific publishing -- perhaps you're an author who has written journal articles or books in math or some related field -- please take a look at this site and see if you can help. The UTC meets the first week of December. We must have all documentation by November 20 in order to prepare our presentation. The selection of symbols will change weekly until our deadline, so please plan to visit the site every week through November 20. -- barbara beeton 8-Nov-1998 5:00:13-GMT,1677;000000000001 Received: from relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de (relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de [129.206.119.201]) by csc-sun.math.utah.edu (8.8.5/8.8.5) with ESMTP id WAA15864 for ; Sat, 7 Nov 1998 22:00:12 -0700 (MST) Received: from relay (relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de [129.206.119.201]) by relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de (8.8.8/8.8.8) with SMTP id GAA02175 for ; Sun, 8 Nov 1998 06:00:10 +0100 (MET) Message-Id: <199811080500.GAA02175@relay.urz.uni-heidelberg.de> Date: Sun, 8 Nov 1998 06:00:10 +0100 From: "L-Soft list server at University of Heidelberg (1.8b)" Subject: Renewal of your subscription to the TEX-EURO list To: "Nelson H.
