As of this morning we have 107 subscribers to the combined capture-l and capture-digest lists. Certainly enough to get some discussion underway. As starters, I have two small bugs to report. I have gotten several calls on these the last few weeks from folks who have purchased Capture or the Capture evaluation package. Adobe has confirmed these, though I do not believe they are currently documented in any public place. #1. PROBLEM: When installing Capture for the first time on a Windows 95 system you get an error saying: 'File MSVCRT20.DLL is in use and can not be overwritten'. You check your system and confirm that you have no other applications running. SOLUTION: Delete file MSVCRT20.DLL from the Windows/System directory and install Capture again. Capture will install a new version of MSVCRT20.DLL in the process. #2. PROBLEM: On a Windows 3.11 Workgroups system you find that Capture 1.01 generates the error messsage: 'Problem Generating Output - Problem while reading or writng a file'. This occurs when Capture writes out the final output file _to a network drive_. Generally you wll find that Capture created an ACD file (if ACD is selected) but no PDF is produced. SOLUTION: You must turn off '32-bit file access'. This is done by opening the Control Panel, opening the 386 Enhanced window, selecting Virtual Memory, and then selecting Change. You will want to deselect '32-bit File Access'. (32-bit disk access should be ok if left on) ------------------------------------- One other FAQ from new Capture users centers around PDF-Writer. It is essential that you use the PDF-Writer which installs from the Capture disks....not the PDF-Writer that installs with Exchange. The Capture supplied version of PDF-Writer has been revised to better work with Capture and in so doing solves several potential problems. The version of PDF-Writer you should be using with a Capture installation is 2.01. If you are unsure about what version you are using, the easiest thing to do is reinstall PDF-Writer from your Capture install disks. You have the option to install PDF-Writer alone without any other Capture components. +----------------------------------------------------------+ | Glenn Gernert Product Support Manager | | EMERGE | | Knowledge In Motion | |----------------------------------------------------------| | 579 D'Onofrio Drive | Phone: 800-829-2459 | | Suite 101 | Fax: 608-829-3561 | | Madison, WI | E-mail: ggernert@emrg.com | | 53719 | WWW: http://www.emrg.com/ | +----------------------------------------------------------+ Adobe Acrobat Electronic Publishing Solutions Acrobat Capture Service Bureau 18-Mar-1996 15:16:01-GMT,1057;000000000001 Received: from grandcanyon.binc.net (majordom@grandcanyon.binc.net [205.173.176.15]) by csc-sun.math.utah.edu (8.7.4/8.7.3) with SMTP id IAA11256 for ; Mon, 18 Mar 1996 08:15:48 -0700 (MST) Received: from localhost (majordom@localhost) by grandcanyon.binc.net (8.6.12/8.6.9) with SMTP id IAA02838; Mon, 18 Mar 1996 08:51:43 -0600 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by grandcanyon.binc.net (8.6.12/8.6.9) id IAA02821 for capture-outgoing; Mon, 18 Mar 1996 08:51:35 -0600 Date: Mon, 18 Mar 1996 14:45:52 GMT Message-Id: <199603181445.AA06050@felix.dircon.co.uk> X-Sender: docctrla@popmail.dircon.co.uk X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Version 1.4.4 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" To: capture-l@emrg.com From: davec@docctrl.co.uk (Dave Cornwell) Subject: Colour and Capture Sender: owner-capture-l@emrg.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: capture-l@emrg.com X-Sender: davec@docctrl.co.uk (Dave Cornwell) Hi all Does anyone have any feel for when Adobe will be incorporating Colour in Capture?? This is fairly common (as you have found out) with Capture running under Win 3.1 or 3.11 Workgroups and has plagued Adobe from the get go. About the only sure fire workaround is to move to Win95. Capture will not only run with fewer errors under this OS...but it should also run about 20% faster. These WIN32S Errors were probably Adobe's biggest incentive to get the 1.01 release on the street that could run under Win95 +----------------------------------------------------------+ | Glenn Gernert Product Support Manager | | EMERGE | | Knowledge In Motion | |----------------------------------------------------------| | 579 D'Onofrio Drive | Phone: 800-829-2459 | | Suite 101 | Fax: 608-829-3561 | | Madison, WI | E-mail: ggernert@emrg.com | | 53719 | WWW: http://www.emrg.com/ | +----------------------------------------------------------+ Adobe Acrobat Electronic Publishing Solutions Acrobat Capture Service Bureau 19-Mar-1996 16:54:38-GMT,2517;000000000001 Received: from grandcanyon.binc.net (majordom@grandcanyon.binc.net [205.173.176.15]) by csc-sun.math.utah.edu (8.7.4/8.7.3) with SMTP id JAA22865 for ; Tue, 19 Mar 1996 09:54:36 -0700 (MST) Received: from localhost (majordom@localhost) by grandcanyon.binc.net (8.6.12/8.6.9) with SMTP id KAA09926; Tue, 19 Mar 1996 10:29:52 -0600 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by grandcanyon.binc.net (8.6.12/8.6.9) id KAA09909 for capture-outgoing; Tue, 19 Mar 1996 10:29:43 -0600 Message-Id: <2.2.32.19960319162742.006f3270@emrg.com> X-Sender: ggernert@emrg.com X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Pro Version 2.2 (32) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Tue, 19 Mar 1996 10:27:42 -0600 To: capture-l@emrg.com From: Glenn Gernert Subject: Re: Acrobat Capture v1.01 and WindowsNT Sender: owner-capture-l@emrg.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: capture-l@emrg.com X-Sender: Glenn Gernert >I've read the FAQ, but still want to ask this question... > >Am I to assume that Capture v1.01 will not run under WinNT? This is correct. The currrent rev of Capture will run only under Win95 and Win 3.1, 3.11. I hear through the grapevine an NT version will be forthcoming later this year. Do keep in mind however, that you could have Capture set up and running on a Win95 box connected to your NT server. With Captures watched directory feature anyone on the network could be feeding TIFFs into a directory for Capture to pick up and process. +----------------------------------------------------------+ | Glenn Gernert Product Support Manager | | EMERGE | | Knowledge In Motion | |----------------------------------------------------------| | 579 D'Onofrio Drive | Phone: 800-829-2459 | | Suite 101 | Fax: 608-829-3561 | | Madison, WI | E-mail: ggernert@emrg.com | | 53719 | WWW: http://www.emrg.com/ | +----------------------------------------------------------+ Adobe Acrobat Electronic Publishing Solutions Acrobat Capture Service Bureau 19-Mar-1996 19:17:27-GMT,2109;000000000001 Received: from grandcanyon.binc.net (majordom@grandcanyon.binc.net [205.173.176.15]) by csc-sun.math.utah.edu (8.7.4/8.7.3) with SMTP id MAA24399 for ; Tue, 19 Mar 1996 12:17:19 -0700 (MST) Received: from localhost (majordom@localhost) by grandcanyon.binc.net (8.6.12/8.6.9) with SMTP id NAA10531; Tue, 19 Mar 1996 13:02:10 -0600 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by grandcanyon.binc.net (8.6.12/8.6.9) id NAA10514 for capture-outgoing; Tue, 19 Mar 1996 13:02:03 -0600 Message-Id: <2.2.32.19960319185956.007016d8@emrg.com> X-Sender: ggernert@emrg.com X-Mailer: Windows Eudora Pro Version 2.2 (32) Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Tue, 19 Mar 1996 12:59:56 -0600 To: capture-l@emrg.com From: Glenn Gernert Subject: Capture OCR Engine Sender: owner-capture-l@emrg.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: capture-l@emrg.com X-Sender: Glenn Gernert Several people have recently asked about the origins of the Capture OCR engine. Certainly many of these situations are installation, operator, or other avoidable errors, but the predominant complaint in the CompuServe Adobe Support forum is in regards to Capture and printing successfully. Having said that, I wonder if their are any recommended RAM / printer memory configurations, and if any specific brand of printer seems to have more success. I've looked at the FAQ's and other sources, but would be interested in real life experience or more information from Adobe marketing or technical personnel. Certainly many of these situations are installation, >operator, or other avoidable errors, but the predominant complaint in the >CompuServe Adobe Support forum is in regards to Capture and printing >successfully. There seems to be some confusion here...perhaps just lack of familiarity with the different members of the Acrobat family of products. Capture has _no_ print capability in itself. Captures' function in the overall scheme of things is to take a scan of a paper document and turn it into a PDF (Acrobat) file. This PDF document can be opened with Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Exchange and viewed on screen or printed. I believe any potential print problems you are referring to are actually a function of Reader or Exchange. >Having said that, I wonder if their are any recommended RAM / printer memory >configurations, and if any specific brand of printer seems to have more success. >I've looked at the FAQ's and other sources, but would be interested in real life >experience or more information from Adobe marketing or technical personnel. Emerge provides support for many of the CDs we produce for our clients and thus I am often on the front line for resolving some of these print problems. Two problems seem to be dominant in the calls we receive: #1 people are trying to print on old dot matrix printers which either do not support the necessary resolution or which have an uneven dot matrix #2. people are trying to print to an HP LaserJet 4 series printers at 600 dpi or in PCL mode. This problem is well documented in the ReadMe and is easy to resolve. Lots of printer memory is not required. At home I often use my HP DeskJet which only has 256K of memory. Keep in mind, however, that this is a line printer. >We are strongly considering Capture and acquiring new hardware to run and >support the software. Would like to make the best hardware decisions on the >fornt end. Again, we need to get our terminology straight here. The hardware requirements to run Acrobat Capture are _very_ significantly different than those for Acrobat Exchange or Reader and I am not at all certain which you are considering. glg +----------------------------------------------------------+ | Glenn Gernert Product Support Manager | | EMERGE | | Knowledge In Motion | |----------------------------------------------------------| | 579 D'Onofrio Drive | Phone: 800-829-2459 | | Suite 101 | Fax: 608-829-3561 | | Madison, WI | E-mail: ggernert@emrg.com | | 53719 | WWW: http://www.emrg.com/ | +----------------------------------------------------------+ Adobe Acrobat Electronic Publishing Solutions Acrobat Capture Service Bureau 20-Mar-1996 12:38:41-GMT,2313;000000000001 Received: from grandcanyon.binc.net (majordom@grandcanyon.binc.net [205.173.176.15]) by csc-sun.math.utah.edu (8.7.4/8.7.3) with SMTP id FAA14007 for ; Wed, 20 Mar 1996 05:38:39 -0700 (MST) Received: from localhost (majordom@localhost) by grandcanyon.binc.net (8.6.12/8.6.9) with SMTP id GAA17123; Wed, 20 Mar 1996 06:23:53 -0600 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by grandcanyon.binc.net (8.6.12/8.6.9) id GAA17106 for capture-outgoing; Wed, 20 Mar 1996 06:23:46 -0600 Date: Wed, 20 Mar 1996 06:23:30 -0600 Message-Id: <199603201223.GAA24126@glacier.binc.net> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" To: capture-l@emrg.com From: jcook@emrg.com (John Cook) Subject: Re: Capture Samples on Web Sender: owner-capture-l@emrg.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: capture-l@emrg.com X-Sender: jcook@emrg.com (John Cook) Glenn, An EXCELLENT piece of marketing here!! The "lagacy" engines have been substantially enhanced by Adobe's Capture Engineering since the acquisition of OCR Systems and NTI. The next version of Capture is likely to contain 3 OCR engines... +----------------------------------------------------------+ | Glenn Gernert Product Support Manager | | EMERGE | | Knowledge In Motion | |----------------------------------------------------------| | 579 D'Onofrio Drive | Phone: 800-829-2459 | | Suite 101 | Fax: 608-829-3561 | | Madison, WI | E-mail: ggernert@emrg.com | | 53719 | WWW: http://www.emrg.com/ | +----------------------------------------------------------+ Adobe Acrobat Electronic Publishing Solutions Acrobat Capture Service Bureau 20-Mar-1996 22:00:03-GMT,1593;000000000001 Received: from grandcanyon.binc.net (majordom@grandcanyon.binc.net [205.173.176.15]) by csc-sun.math.utah.edu (8.7.4/8.7.3) with SMTP id OAA27213 for ; Wed, 20 Mar 1996 14:59:46 -0700 (MST) Received: from localhost (majordom@localhost) by grandcanyon.binc.net (8.6.12/8.6.9) with SMTP id PAA19111; Wed, 20 Mar 1996 15:28:55 -0600 Received: (from majordom@localhost) by grandcanyon.binc.net (8.6.12/8.6.9) id PAA19091 for capture-outgoing; Wed, 20 Mar 1996 15:28:45 -0600 From: jnolan@mv.us.adobe.com Date: Wed, 20 Mar 96 13:23:29 PDT Message-Id: <9602208273.AA827356638@signum.mv.us.adobe.com> To: capture-l@emrg.com Subject: Re: Old Capture Problem (Reviewer 9019 on convert) Sender: owner-capture-l@emrg.com Precedence: bulk Reply-To: capture-l@emrg.com X-Sender: jnolan@mv.us.adobe.com >When we open one of the old files- we get the >message "old format will now be updated-converting >to new format and then we get the following: >"an internal error has occurred (9019) On diagnosing this problem with a customer file, it was found that the offending ACD was created by a beta version of Capture 1.01. Reviewer apparently can handle files generated by Capture 1.01b1, but it seems that some "unofficial" releases also went out. Unfortunately, Reviewer 1.01 doesn't tell you what the ACD version of the file is, so it's hard for an end-user to diagnose. One of our simms is rated at 70ns and the other 3 are rated at 60ns. I took out the odd ball and it all seems to work fine!!! Are we supposed to check all the spot welds and connection too!!! we will get the hardware vendor to replace the odd simms board and we should be OK. we hope. thanks for all the help and support I have gotten -- Michael A. After much experimentation with components from the other computers, I tried switching memory - turns out that 2 72pin 16MB SIMMS isn't a valid configuration for my motherboard. According to the board manufacturer, it shouldn't have booted in that configuration. If anyone knows of a resource for indentifying SIMMS by serial numbers, so that I can double check the delivered configurations of our client's PCs (some of them are experiencing similar inexplicable constant errors) That would be most helpful.
