This Web site contains a set of style files for BibTeX, LaTeX, and TeX, and associated test files.

This complete directory is available in a standard InfoZip file here.

The is-*.bst files were developed before the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) system, and the ISBN-13 system, were defined. They extend the original *.bst files that were supplied with the first release of BibTeX in 1985, and documented in btxdoc.pdf and btxhak.pdf. The new files contain optional added support for CODEN, ISBN, ISSN, LCCN, and PRICE fields, extended PAGES fields, the PERIODICAL entry, and extended citation label suffixing. The is-*.bst file are supplied here for historical evidence, but should not be used in new documents.

The xchicago.bst and xchicago.sty were developed later as extensions of the Chicago citation style, and add optional support for bibsource, bookpages, CODEN, day, fjournal, ISBN, ISSN, LCCN, MRclass, MRnumber, MRreviewer, price, and URL), and the Periodical document type. There is also a secondary set of fieldnames (annote, bibdate, bibsource, classcodes, classification, fjournal, journalabr, keywords, language, subject, thesaurus, and treatment) that are recognized, but not normally typeset.

The xxchicago.bst and xxchicago.sty followed the previous set, and added optional support for advisor, articleno, book-DOI, book-URL, ISSN-L, pagecount, and remark fieldnames.

The final set of BibTeX styles in this collection are those named x-*.bst, with a required associated x-bst.sty style for TeX and LaTeX. The BibTeX styles are derived from a common base file, xbtxbst.doc, with variants chosen by the C preprocessor, cpp. The comment header in the base file describes preprocessor options that allow creation of further variants.

The x-*.pdf and plain-tex.pdf files illustrate the use of the BibTeX styles, and the first set of that list typeset the biblography several times with various output sizes and options to illustrate how the reference list appearance can easily be changed without modifying the BibTeX database file.

Importantly, the markup added by the x-*.bst files covers all generated output fields, and the program xbbl-to-bib.awk can convert the formatted output .bbl file produced by BibTeX back to a BibTeX database file. That file, of course, lacks any comments in the original, and any fields whose values were not used in the output listing. The x-*.pdf files document how this works, and why it is useful to support round-trip conversion.

The Unix shell script, doi-to-bibtex.sh, is intended to be installed as a command doi-to-bibtex. It provides a convenient interface to the DOI agency to produce from one or more command-line DOI values (with or without a URL prefix) rough BibTeX entries from data at the DOI agency. Further cleanup with bibclean and biborder is advisable, and of course, the data should be checked against publisher data, or printed or online journal issues: errors are common, notably in misspellings, loss of accents, truncation of author lists, and botching of mathematics in titles.

Another Unix shell script, journal.sh, interfaces to a large program, journal.awk, that replaces journal names with consistent BibTeX strings, and supplies CODEN, ISSN, ISSN-L, fjournal, and journal-URL values, along with BibTeX @String{j-XXX = "…"} definitions. It requires quotation mark string delimiters, as produced by bibclean, rather than braces.
