abstract = "Network computing seeks to utilize the aggregate
resources of many networked computers to solve a single
problem. In so doing it is often possible to obtain
supercomputer performance from an inexpensive local
area network. The drawback is that network computing is
complicated and error prone when done by hand,
especially if the computers have different operating
systems and data formats and are thus heterogeneous.
The heterogeneous network computing environment (HeNCE)
is an integrated graphical environment for creating and
running parallel programs over a heterogeneous
collection of computers. It is built on a lower level
package called parallel virtual machine (PVM). The
HeNCE philosophy of parallel programming is to have the
programmer graphically specify the parallelism of a
computation and to automate, as much as possible, the
tasks of writing, compiling, executing, debugging, and
tracing the network computation. Key to HeNCE is a
graphical language based on directed graphs that
describe the parallelism and data dependencies of an
application. Nodes in the graphs represent conventional
Fortran or C subroutines and the arcs represent data
and control flow. This article describes the present
state of HeNCE, its capabilities, limitations, and
areas of future research.",

abstract = "A number of applications on parallel computers deal
with very large data sets that cannot fit in main
memory. In such applications, data must be stored in
files on disks and fetched into memory during program
execution. Parallel programs with large out-of-core
arrays stored in files must read/write smaller sections
of the arrays from/to files. In this article, we
describe a method for accessing sections of out-of-core
arrays efficiently. Our method, the extended two-phase
method, uses collective I/O: Processors cooperate to
combine several I/O requests into fewer larger
granularity requests, reorder requests so that the file
is accessed in proper sequence, and eliminate
simultaneous I/O requests for the same data. In
addition, the I/O workload is divided among processors
dynamically, depending on the access requests. We
present performance results obtained from two real
out-of-core parallel applications---matrix
multiplication and a Laplace's equation solver---and
several synthetic access patterns, all on the Intel
Touchstone Delta. These results indicate that the
extended two-phase method significantly outperformed a
direct (noncollective) method for accessing out-of-core
array sections.",
