abstract = "In this paper we present a package of routines written
in the S language and Fortran for the analysis of
spatial point patterns. A large body of techniques
exists for analyzing point patterns, but there is no
integrated framework in which these techniques can be
applied. We have used the commercial package, S-Plus,
to create such an environment. S-Plus's flexible,
extensible nature makes it easy to integrate spatial
point pattern analysis routines. We do not lose any of
the powerful functionality of S-Plus. Analysis of
spatial point patterns is described by many authors,
for example (Diggle, 1983) and (Ripley, 1981). We have
implemented some of the methods described there as well
as newer techniques in the field. Specific functions
have been written for: point data definition and
                 display; geometrical point/polygon overlay functions;
point pattern summary statistics; point pattern
simulations and Monte-Carlo tests. We have constructed
a practical tool for the development of new spatial
statistical methods and the analysis of data. This
paper is a condensed version of Rowlingson and Diggle
(1991a), which contains further examples and complete
listing of the help pages and code for Splancs.",

abstract = "A powerful software environment for research can be
created by combining database management systems and
commercial software for analysis and display of data.
This provides a richer programming environment and more
sophisticated graphical possibilities than are offered
by present database systems. It provides a data storage
and retrieval system that adheres to a standard syntax,
SQL, and which is more robust than file-based
approaches. Only recently has it become possible to
combine these two kinds of software but increasingly
database and scientific application software has the
open architecture that is conducive to the data sharing
that makes such combinations possible. New database
systems also accommodate the complex types of data of
interest to scientists. We have a way to link
                 appropriate database software and scientific
application software which is called the Generic
Database Interface (GDI). In essence, it consists of a
core set of functions, complemented by product-specific
interface code which is unique to each database product
and each application product. The GDI provides the
mechanism for both submitting a SQL query to any
supported database and also handling the data that are
exchanged in satisfaction of the query. We illustrate
the strength of this approach by applying it to tasks
involving selection and display of ocean temperature
data using the Montage database management system and
the S-PLUS statistics application. The examples
illustrate a few of the novel capabilities of this
approach; they do not comprise a complete data
                 processing application.",

abstract = "Performance prediction is necessary in order to deal
with multi-dimensional performance effects on parallel
                 systems. The compiler-generated analytical model
developed in this paper accounts for the effects of
cache behavior, CPU execution time and message passing
overhead for real programs written in high level
                 data-parallel languages. The performance prediction
technique is shown to be effective in analyzing several
non-trivial applications as the problem size and number
of processors vary. We leverage technology from the
maple symbolic manipulation system and the S-PLUS
statistical package in order to present users with
                 critical performance information necessary for
                 performance debugging, architectural enhancement and
procurement of parallel systems. The usability of these
results is improved through specifying confidence
intervals as well as predicted execution times for
parallel applications. Cost optimal analysis techniques
are also developed using the symbolic equations for
                 execution time.",

the S-PLUS software system. Using a visual data
analysis approach, wavelet concepts are explained in a
way that is intuitive and easy to understand. In
addition to wavelets, a whole range of related signal
processing techniques such as wavelet packets, local
cosine analysis, and matching pursuits are covered.
Applications of wavelet analysis are illustrated,
                 including nonparametric function estimation, digital
image compression, and time-frequency signal analysis.
The book and software is intended for a broad range of
data analysts, scientists, and engineers. While most
textbooks on wavelet analysis require advanced training

abstract = "Several algorithmic models have been proposed to
estimate software costs and other management
parameters. Early prediction of completion time is
absolutely essential for proper advance planning and
aversion of the possible ruin of a project. Putnam's
SLIM model offers a fairly reliable method that is used
extensively to predict project completion times and
manpower requirements as the project evolves. However,
the nature of the Norden/Rayleigh curve used by Putnam,
renders it unreliable during the initial phases of the
project, especially in projects involving a fast
manpower buildup, as is the case with most software
projects. In this paper, we propose the use of a model
that improves early prediction considerably over the
Putnam model. An analytic proof of the model's improved
performance is also demonstrated on simulated data.",

abstract = "Many agencies and private companies now use GIS as a
tool for producing maps of wildlife habitats and other
natural resources. The next step in application of GIS
is data analysis to address issues of specific concern
to resource managers. We present three diverse examples
which show how GIS can be applied to relationships
between hydrological and biological resources. In the
first example, we show cation-anion characteristics of
spring water in the San Bernardino Mountains of
California. Plots of the data in the form of Stiff
                 diagrams clearly illustrate differences between
calcareous, hydrothermal waters along a fault line and
artesian waters that typify most of the sample sites.
Further study is needed to determine if such
differences help explain the patchy distribution of
certain wetland plant species within the San Bernardino
Mountains. In the second example, we show application
of GIS to vegetation transect and hydrological data
obtained as part of a long-term riparian monitoring
program in the Sierra Nevada of California.
Box-and-whisker plots of the data using S-Plus (StatSci
Division, Mathsoft, Inc., Seattle, Washington, USA
prove especially useful in showing the distribution of
wetland indicators in relation to distance from stream.
The third example shows habitat analysis for the Santa
Ana River woolly star, an endangered plant species
whose life cycle is linked to flooding frequency and
