| 31 January | Speaker: Keshav Patel | Contact: Keshav Patel Title: A Mathematician's Approach to Biology: A Biologist's Approach to Mathematics Abstract: In the last 70+ years, both biology and mathematics have benefited greatly from each other's expertise. Today is a great time to be in this space, as the advancement of biological techniques (imaging, gene editing, etc.) has vastly increased the areas in which detailed mathematical models can be developed. In this talk, I will discuss a few historical examples of how mathematics has benefited biology and vice versa. Then, I will spend time discussing my own work on platelet aggregation models. |
| 7 February | Speaker: Aryaman Maithani | Contact: Aryaman Maithani Title: A Chaotic Game Abstract: Here’s a chaotic party trick to show your non-mathsy friends the next time you’re at a party with a die, a paper, a pencil, and a ruler. Draw three vertices of a triangle, and mark a point randomly. Then, use the die to randomly select one of the three vertices. Draw a new point halfway between your point and the chosen vertex. Repeat ad infinitum (or, more realistically, ad nauseam). Behold and wonder at the pattern you’ve just created. To see animations of this (being generated live), as well as variations (that you can suggest!), come to the HSAC! (Proofs will be served for your mathsy friends.) |

| 28 March | Speaker: Dr. (!!!) Rebecca Hardenbrook | Contact: Rebecca Hardenbrook Title: Name That Theorem!!! Abstract: Almost always, we are asked to recall a result in one direction: given the result, prove it. But, given a proof, can we state the result? In this game, small teams will play for the chance to claim victory by guessing the statement of several theorems/lemmas/important mathematical results when presented with their respective proofs. While no monetary or physical prize will be granted, the winning team will receive infinite respect as the best grad students of all time!!! |

Alex Beams | Contact: Alex Beams Title: Slide Roulette Abstract: We will have a very special colloquium next Tuesday (4/11) as Dr. Alex Beans, former king of GSAC, will be giving his last slide roulette presentation. If you haven’t been to one of these famous talks, the idea is that Alex will present a powerpoint of slides prepared (“prepared” may be a stretch here) by us grad students, on any and every topic desired. Obscure proofs, memes, thesis defense slides from our recent doctors, or anything else you can think of (within reason -- Fernando will be there) are all fair game. |
