Fall in the Wasatch Mountains

This may be the view you are treated to when in October or November you walk up behind the University and look towards the southeast. In the foreground is the campus of the University of Utah, with the Math Department being in the very lower right corner. The dome shaped building on the left is the Jon Huntsman center which marks approximately the other side of the academic part of the campus. Beyond it, to the left of the picture, is the University Hospital. The campus is immediately adjacent to the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, and you can walk off into the wilderness and see deer, bobcats, birds, and other wildlife. The campus is at an altitude of approximately 4,500 feet. Some of the highest mountains you can see are over 11,000 feet.

The dominating steep face in the center of the picture is Mount Olympus. There is a popular trail to its top that offers great views of the valley.

On the right, almost exactly in the middle of the picture, you can see an exactly horizontal line. That's what's left of Lake Bonneville , an ancient freshwater lake that covered about one third of Utah and shrank to the present Great Salt Lake about ten thousand years ago. There are several such " benches", indeed, the University of Utah is located on a bench.
