On Localization and Propagation for Shear Crippling (Kinkband) Instability in a Long Imperfect Laminated Composite Cylindrical Shell under External Pressure by Reaz A. Chaudhuri Dept Material Science and Engineering, UofU JTB 320, 4:30pm Monday, November 17, 1997 Abstract The presentation features a fully nonlinear analysis for prediction of shear crippling (kinkband) instability propagating in a long thick laminated composite cylindrical shell. The main result is prediction of equilibrium paths. These paths are often unstable, appearing in the presence of interlaminar shear deformation. A nonlinear 3D finite element method is applied to study the failure modes under radial/hydrostatic compressive loads. The 3D theory, possible instability triggers and the computational features will be discussed. Request for preprints and reprints to cherk@math.utah.edu.
