Title: Riemann and the idea of a zeta function

Abstract: Riemann is one of the most remarkable figures in mathematics. This talk examines what it is about his mode of thought that makes him so fascinating to historians of the subject. In the talk, this is illustrated particularly with one of the concepts by which his work impacts us most today: the idea of a zeta function.
