Loss mechanisms in hollow-core photonic band-gap fibers

We review key loss mechanisms in hollow-core photonic band-gap fibers. A particular emphasis is given to coupling between core and surface modes which we believe is a dominant loss effect. Results of numerical modeling are compared with experimental measurements. To minimize loss, we propose fiber profile designs with suppressed surface modes.
